Justin Long grew up as the middle child of three boys in Fairfield Connecticut. His father R. James Long was a professor of philosophy and Latin at Fairfield University and his mother Wendy Lesniak was a stage actress. His grandmother was Sicilian. Long was raised in a fairly conservative Catholic environment. His older brother Damian works as a stage actor and teaches at Weston High School.
Long attended Fairfield College, Preparatory School, a Jesuit high school, and later attended Vassar College. There he joined the sketch comedy group Laughingstock and acted in several plays including Butterflies Are Free.
