Advanced Education in General Dentistry < UT Health San Antonio (2024)

Overview

The Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program (AEGD) at UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry Department of Comprehensive Dentistry is an intensive clinical and didactic program focused on providing residents with a strong foundation to treat patients comprehensively in all aspects of general dentistry. The program offers the following tracks:

  1. One year AEGD program
  2. An optional second year. Interested residents apply to the second year during their first year
  3. AEGD certificate plus M.S in Dental Sciences from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
  • Didactic Curriculum:
    • 350 hours annually
    • Lectures on: Sedation Dentistry, Advanced Prosthodontics, Implant Dentistry, Digital Dentistry, Advanced Periodontics, Advanced Oral Surgery, Advanced Endodontics, Esthetic Dentistry, Smile Design, Advanced Treatment Planning, Guided Surgery and Operative Dentistry
  • Clinical Curriculum:
    • Over 1700 hours of Clinical Dentistry: focus on comprehensive care and advanced general dentistry
    • San Antonio Christian Dental Rotation: emphasis on OMS and Digital Dentistry
    • Community Clinic Rotation: emphasis on Advanced Endodontics and OMS
    • Optional private practice rotation

    • Periodontist
    • Prosthodontist
    • General Dentist with expertise in Digital Dentistry
    • General Dentist with expertise in Conscious Sedation

Admissions Requirements

Our application process begins May 21of each year, and ends on October 1. Unfortunately, applications which are not postmarked by October 1 will not be considered for acceptance.

Applicants from ADA-accredited dental schools:

  1. On track to graduate from an ADA- accredited dental school
    1. Graduation is required prior to matriculation
  2. Completed PASS application (https://www.adea.org/PASSapp/applicants/)
    1. Official transcripts from all undergraduate and dental schools
    2. CV/Resume
    3. Five PPI and two Professional Evaluation Forms (letters of recommendation)
  3. Successful completion Part I of National Dental Board Examination (prior to application deadline)
    1. Successful completion of Part II of National Dental Boards is required prior to matriculation
  4. Personal interview, if selected as finalist

Applicants from non-ADA-accredited dental schools:

  1. Graduation from dental school
  2. Completed PASS application (https://www.adea.org/PASSapp/applicants/)

  3. TOEFL (iBT format). A minimum score of 92 or above on the iBT is required of all applicants

Degree Requirements

A Certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry will be awarded upon the student’s successful completion of the prescribed AEGD curriculum with a PASS in all courses, recommendation from the program director to the Assistant Dean for Students and certification by the dean to the president.

The M.S. in Dental Science degree will be awarded to students who successfully complete the certificate and the required courses in the Graduate School.

Objectives/Program Outcomes

The goal of the program is to provide training beyond the level of pre-doctoral education in oral health care, using applied basic and behavioral sciences. Education in this program is based on the concept that oral health is an integral and interactive part of total health. The program is designed to expand the scope and depth of the graduates’ knowledge and skills to enable them to provide comprehensive oral health care to a wide range of population groups.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES: At the completion of the program the student will:

  1. Act as a primary care provider for individuals and groups of patients. This includes: providing emergency and multidisciplinary comprehensive oral health care; providing patient focused care that is coordinated by the general practitioner; directing health promotion and disease prevention activities; and using advanced dental treatment modalities.
  2. Plan and provide multidisciplinary oral health care for a wide variety of patients including patients who are medically-compromised and/or have special needs.
  3. Function effectively and efficiently in multiple health care environments within interdisciplinary health care teams.
  4. Apply scientific principles to learning and oral health care. This includes using critical thinking, evidence or outcomes-based clinical decision-making, and technology-based information retrieval systems.
  5. Demonstrate professionalism, including ethical principles, patient centered care, adaptability, and acceptance of cultural diversity in professional practice.

GEND5027. Pain Control & Sedation. 3.5 Credit Hours.

The course is an in-depth, comprehensive assessment of pain control in dentistry. Beginning with neuroanatomy and pain, the course builds a valid foundation in basic science before advancing to a panoramic discussion of techniques in anxiety management and pain control. Behavioral management and conscious sedation techniques review are the major emphasis and are accompanied by demonstrations.

GEND7008. Interdisciplinary Treatment Planning. 1 Credit Hour.

This course will focus on contemporary treatment planning and execution of interdisciplinary cases. We will discuss treatment planning fundamentals and treatment strategies for complex cases. Emphasis will be on facially driven treatment planning concepts with emphasis on airway, esthetics, function, structure, and biology. We will discuss the use of digital technology for treatment plan presentation, treatment plan formulation and asynchronous communication with the interdisciplinary team. Participants will present cases in a seminar format for discussion with AEGD faculty. Treatment modalities will focus on evidence-based dentistry and will cover all disciplines.

GEND7011. AEGD Fall Clinic 1. 3.5 Credit Hours.

AEGD students will gain clinical experience as they treat patients in the Advanced General Dentistry Clinic. Cases gradually increase in complexity and include treatment of medically compromised patients, implant cases, and interdisciplinary cases.

GEND7012. AEGD Spring Clinic 1. 7 Credit Hours.

AEGD students will gain clinical experience as they treat patients in the Advanced General Dentistry Clinic. Cases gradually increase in complexity and include treatment of medically compromised patients, implant cases, and interdisciplinary cases.

GEND8011. AEGD Fall Clinic 2. 7 Credit Hours.

AEGD students will gain clinical experience as they treat patients in the Advanced General Dentistry Clinic. Cases gradually increase in complexity and include treatment of medically comprised patients, implant cases and interdisciplinary cases.

GEND8012. AEGD Spring Clinic 2. 7 Credit Hours.

AEGD students will gain clinical experiences as they treat patients in the Advance General Dentistry Clinic. Cases gradually increase in complexity and include treatments of medically compromised patients, implant cases and interdisciplinary cases.

INTD5013. Perio/Pros/Endo/Orth Interdisciplinary Course 1. 1 Credit Hour.

A seminar that brings together the residents and graduate staff from the periodontic, prosthodontic,endodontic and orthodontic postdoctoral programs to share clinically relevant multidisciplinary information. Patient diagnostic evaluations and treatment plans are evaluated in an interactive environment. Selected topics involving new advancements are presented and discussed.
